As a man, I've found that I respond best when a girl flaps her arms around and whoops excessively. She really catches my eye if she can loudly quote Monty Python in a fake British accent, as she is doing silly walks around in my general area, dressed as a female Viking with a brass breastplate on.
But, many other men respond well to the direct approach.

Try to be straight forward. It is the hope that he feels the same way but, be prepared if he doesn't are you going to want to continue the friendship or is it going to be too awkward. If you are really close friends he might have already figured it out.

sit him down, talk about whatever you like, and play with his hand. If he doesn't like you, he'll pull it away gently. If he does, you guys will probably start making out. Getting some time alone with a person is the key to any of this stuff I think.
