My friends live in an old house in Wales called 'Pentrans' but no-one seems to know what the name means?

Pen means "head" or, in names of places, "at the end of" or "at the top of". Trans has no meaning in Welsh, so perhaps your best line of investigation might be local history? Transport?
"Tras" means "lineage". Now there's a romantic thought! A house named by a person whose family tree had come to an end and wasn't there any more to tell them that it was "tras", not "trans"!
