Ok, so a "catholic" man passes away. I use the work catholic in quotes because he was raised a catholic, baptized, confirmed, and married (the first time) in the catholic church... However, he cheated on his first wife, re-married, uses drugs, treats his children terribly and never attends church. should he have a christian mass and burial? if not, what are the other alternatives?

I would agree with Fr. K and some of the others.

This is just the type of person who will need this the most. I would also suggest that there be a Novena offered as well as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

I am not catholic so I would say it doesn't matter in the least. To me the only consideration should be what makes the family happy.

The only thing that matters for a Christian is does he accept Jesus. Jesus doesn't care about the rest. Unless you are gay of course.
