From the IRS:

"If you are an employee, you must work full
time in the general area of your new
workplace for at least 39 weeks during the
12 months right after you move. If you are
self-employed, you must work full time in
the general area of your new workplace for
at least 39 weeks during the first 12
months and a total of at least 78 weeks
during the 24 months right after you move."

If you are not working, there is no deduction allowed.

If you did not move to a new job, sorry your moving expenses are not deductible. Please see a professional tax advisor. Some of the big tax preparation firms will answer your questions for free.

You should get some advice on taxability of your retirement and disability income.

No, you can only deduct moving expenses if the move is job-related, and since it doesn't sound like either of you will be working in the new area, you can't deduct them.

Good luck.
