I'm not inviting a whole bunch of people. Just the close family members. And his pah-rah and Nanny. But is it proper to send out cards inviteing them or just call? If send out cards how far in advance??

From what you say it sounds like it is more informal, so in this case, you should send out the invitations 2 to 3 weeks before the christening. If it was more formal, it should be about 5 to 8 weeks.
My friends invitations read something like this:
The_____family invites you to witness
the Christenting of their precious daughter

church name
address
brunch at their home (if you have this)
RSVP: phone number

I like invitations because they save me lenghty phone calls to all the relatives when I just want to say "OK, see you Sunday". Also, you ensure that they have the time and date and place written down. Lastly, it depends on the type of invitations you are sending. Fancy gold envelopes with silk ribbons might throw people off and think you are having a big event. On the other hand, a "fill-in-the-blanks type invitation from the supermarket says you just want them to come over.
I would send them a couple of weeks in advance. Too early, peopel forget, too close and they already made plans.

With my children, it was just a call. (But then most of the invitees already attend the church and would have been there anyway). But you can go formal and send out cards. Couples weeks so they have time to schedule it would be good.

(But the real reason I decided to answer was because I loved the picture...too cute)

Shouldn't the God parents take care of that? I would give them 2 weeks notice if possible....
