You must run at least middle distance. And you must already be in good shape, because you must break through a very tough pain threshold. If you are in good enough shape and have a high enough tolerance for pain and are able to break through "tons" of endorphins will be released into your blood. When that happens you get the runners high and you will no longer notice your breath, or hear your footstep. In fact it becomes as if your physical body no longer exist and like you are all spirit. You will also feel an ecstatic happiness. Hence the high. Unfortunately, you will also get a "hangover" once the high disappear.

When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. Endorphins make you feel awesome, thus the "runners high"

I believe that semi-long distance running (i.e. 3-6 miles) will get you there.

Running has a lot to do with breathing. Finding your breathing rhythm is like meditating. Not only are you able to run for longer, you're able to clear your mind as well.

I'd check into some great runner's magazines like Runner's World for some back articles and starter guides.

When you run, your muscle fibers are being broken down. After an difficult run, your body releases endorphins as a natural pain killer. The more difficult your run, the more endorphins. You can get this sensation from distance running, sprinting, and even difficult lifting.
