Are great danes easily expected to get demodex mange? I know they have the bugs all over them but I don't see how she started to get it. The only thing that is happening is that she is losing small patches of hair, about the size of a quarter, on her back. There are no sores or bumps. Today I put some used motor oil on her. Will that help?

Get some Dawn dishing washing soap and get the oil off of the dog IMMEDIATELY! The chemicals in the oil will be absorbed throught the skin. It can in the long term, cause liver problems.

As for the mange, have the vet test to see what kind you have.

Go to the vet and have a scraping done--it is the only way to tell if it is mange. Some skin problems appear to be mange and are not. A skin test is the only way to know if this is something which can be cleared up with a special shampoo, cream, or on its own.

Motor oil is a very bad idea. Clean it off.

Demodex is genetic and you need to have the vet treat it because you cant buy the dip to treat it over the counter. It needs to be looked at by the vet because (unless you have already tested it and were told its demodex) it could be sarcotpic mange or something else like ringworm. And you don't want to give it any meds because certain meds (like steroids) make the mange worse. Take it in

Motor oil is toxic. Wash it off with Dawn dish soap. Go to the vet for a scraping & meds. And for Pete's sake, don't breed her if she's positive for Demodex. She'll pass it on to her pups.

Take to the vet do not put anything on your dog. The vet will do a skin scraping to identify what it is then will know what treatment to do. It will not get better will get worse without proper treatment.
