I think you should consider any item you bring to a get together as a gift to the host and it would be inpolite to take the leftovers with you. I would estimate about half a bottle per person to be on the safe side so I think you may be right on target. Also, if you dont like spending all that money and not really being able to enjoy it, buy an extra one for yourself, then you can savor it at home.

Once the wine has been put on offer, I think you run the risk of seeming tacky if you attempt to take any back. I think the general etiquette on this is that the wine belongs to the host and hostess and they get to dispose of it if any is leftover. I'd personally feel kind of uncomfortable asking the hosts if I could take the leftovers home unless I knew for sure ahead of time that they wouldn't drink the remainder themselves.
I think that if you want to make sure any unused wine goes home with you, what you might do is present a couple of bottles at the beginning of the dinner, and if that gets used up quickly go present a couple more.

12 people.... 6 bottles... if there's any left over, it wasn't that great of a party. =)
Seriously, if there are leftovers, leave them for the host. Maybe even buy a bit better bottle and put a festive bow on it as a host gift.
If you're wanting to have wine at home afterward, buy extra and leave it at home.

It would be considered impolite to take the unused wine back home with you. Whatever isn't opened should stay.
Exception: if the hostess insists that you take home the unused bottles.

It is impolite... they may even talk about it behind your back on how you brought something and took it back. if your not sure how much to bring, buy the 6 bottles but only bring in a few and see how much they drink. if you see it finishing bring in another bottle

If its at a home, its a gift to the host. If its a shop party, its yours.
