I have been told the bible refers to his "seven locks". Were these similar to the dreadlocks of modern times.

Perhaps. They were braids of some sort, that is for certain.

The Hebrew word translated "locks" is "machlaphah" (Pronounced makh-law-faw) and is Strong's Ref. # 4253. It is derived from HSN2498 (to slide by); a ringlet of hair (as gliding over each other).

Other translations use braids instead of locks for the Hebrew.

No Samson simply had seven braids not dreadlocks. There is no mention of dreadlocks anywhere in the Scriptures that is just a false Rastafarian speculation which is non Biblical by the way. If you look at the very definition of Lock it really applies to braids not dreads. The word lock has been used prior to the Rastafarian dreadlocks hairstyle and by definition means a curl of the hair. Entwining your hair into braids is also a description of locks. Therefore, Rastafarians or dreadlocks wearers do not have copyright on the word LOCK whatsoever. There is no part in the Scriptures where it says Samson had dreads just a pseudo assumption by Rastas and non Rastas.

As Samson was under a vow to not cut his hair or beard, it is reasonable that he would have kept it in some type of braid or ponytail to keep it under control. In Judges 16:13 Samson tells Delilah if she weaves his hair into seven locks in a loom that he will be powerless. It is not clear from the wording whether he had seven locks, and she was to weave them together, or whether she was to create the seven locks.

I imagine that they were similar, but they were not intentional. They were probably just the outcome of poor hygene in those days. Now we go to a salon or have someone dread them for us! I'm sure that the modern day dreads are much better looking and much cleaner!

No! sampson was not black either, He was Jewish. or at least Israelite. He may have braided his hair or tied a pony tail. but its not clear that dreadlocks were even the style.
