Jack is a traditional nickname for people called John, but it tends not to be used nowadays and you should only address someone with the name "John" as "Jack" with his permission. At the same time, many people nowadays are called "Jack" as an official first name and would not like to be called "John". Jack is a very popular name among Jewish people, as Jacob is the name of one of the Jewish patriarchs. In Latin Jacob is "Jacobus", which is normally translated as "James". All the people named James in the Bible were really called "Jacob". This makes it all the more amazing that Jack should be short for John, while Jim is short for James! But there it is!

No, they are not interchangeable. Someone named John may not like to be called Jack and vice versa
