It is only in reverse on one side (the right or starboard side), and normal on the left side (port). This is because planes used to actually have real flags on each side while they were flying. When the plane is moving forward, or flying, the flags are swept towards the rear of the plane by the air. Thus, they are now painted on (having two flags is not particularly aerodynamic), but painted on to indicate the forward direction of movement.

There are actually laws about how the American flag may be displayed. One requirement is that when it is displayed things like on uniforms and aircraft that the blue field is towards the front of the person or plane. I'm sure many other countries have similar laws.

The answer to this is to show what it would look like IF it were blowing in the wind...

Thats why, on jets with American flags...one side is correct, and the other shows a backwards flag.

Huh, I often wondered how the pilots checked their rearview mirrors....

Seriously, I have no clue unless it would be for ground crews like the luggage handlers ... do they have to back up? Be interesting to hear the real answer ....

For the same reason that it's right way around on one side of the flagpole and wrong way around on the other side.
