Not a lot of people. When I came back from active service the last thing I wanted was everyone around asking stupid questions like did you kill anybody (someone always asks that). When you return from war it takes a while to adjust to normal life and break the habits of living in a combat situation. Go to a quiet hotel in the countryside for a long weekend and get to know each other again. He will need time, be supportive and let him tell you about it in his own time.

Having spent a long time in H M Forces my best surprise was a short break away with the one I loved

It is great having a beer and a wee party when he comes back but find time for just the 2 of you, he will really appreciate it

GOOD LUCK

Get some alone time, maybe book a nice hotel or just light candles at home and make him up a big basket of all the things he will have missed while he way away- like his favourite drink, any snacks he loves, a CD of his favourite music, an aftershave he likes etc.

If you think that he has not had any of your 'love' for six months, then this would be a good place to start. He also would not have had a bath or decent shower, sunday roast, bacon, footy on tv, a few pints, the cold, a nice bed, much of a lie in, the pictures. In fact any of these would be good, just decide the order.

Throw a party for everyone that knows him. You'd be limited by cost I guess, may not be cheap but its not every week. Then, afterwards, spend as much intimate time together as you can.Really BE with each other and tell him as often as you want or need to that you love him. Good luck xx
