A prion is a protein that has the ability to reproduce itself, usually by causing the refolding of a normal protein into a prion form. They are responsible for BSE, or "mad cow" disease, as well as some very rare human diseases such as kuru or creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. There is not a simple test that I know of for any prion, usually they are found by histology, which involves taking a biopsy of the infected tissue (which is not generally done in living sufferers of these disease since they affect the brain and have no treatment) and specific histochemical staining.
