Why do alot of business accept Visa but many do not accept Discover or American Express?

The merchant is charged a higher transaction fee by AMEX and Discover than Visa/Mastercard for each transaction.In my view it's a bad idea for the merchant not to offer AMEX/Discover and is very short sited. Customers today more than ever want the choice as to their preferred payment option and I tend to give my business to companies that honer AMEX. If a merchant doesn't offer AMEX/Discover it makes me wonder what else they are skimping on to save on each transaction.

The fees are higher than say Visa and Mastercard.

The processor fees vary. May be higher for the others.
