Pillow shams are a more decorative way to match your comfortor. Instead of you just slipping a pillow case over your pillow the shams are split in the middle and you stuff your pillow in. That way you have no opening showing on the side it is hidden in the middle in the back when you put it on your bed.

Pillow shams are made as decor for the bed, not really to be slept on. They are extra, besides the 2 main pillows that you would use on either a full, queen or king bed.
There are also European Shams that are very popular now. they are quite a bit more square and larger than a regular queen pillow. They look very pretty behind your regular pillows.
Are they necessary at all-no. However, they do dress up a bed very well and most comforter sets do come with some form of shams.

Pillow shams are decorative covers for pillows, usually with a ruffle around the edge. They are used on the bed, along with the pillows that are encased in pillow cases (the ones you actually sleep on). Hope this helps!

Pillow shams, go on pillows that are for decoration. In other words you don't sleep on pillows with pillow shams, you sleep on pillows with pillow cases. Pillows with shams go on top of the bed after the bed has been nicely made up.

Ask Martha and she'll say: You put them on the pillows over the pillow case. They usually match the bedspread or quilt and make the room look better. They also keep dust off the pillows if you don't use the room frequently. Ask me and they really do serve a purpose other than to give people with too much time something else to do.
When we got married and were registering for gifts my very intelligent hubby had to ask what a dust ruffle was :-)

A decorative cover to keep your pillows clean! It is different from a pillow case in the way that the pillow slides in from the back. Also, WOMEN rarely sleep on their shams b/c they are decorative and they don't want to dirty them.
DECORATION!

Shams have ruffles edges....they are decorated unlike pillow cases. Pillow cases are like sacks while shams have an opening on the back.

Pillow shams are just a fancy name for pillow cases. I guess their main purpose is to match your bedding and sort of keep your pillow clean.
