To much stimulus during the day such as television. Or using the bed as a punishment would certainly make them reluctant to go to bed as well

Too much stimulation. Make sure they are tired...stick to a schedule...and set the quite time mood. My kids know when I grab the book, my daughters blanket, her sippy cup and tell my son to get him PJ's on...it is quite time and bed time is not far behind.

Getting into a routine is key...set it and stick to it!

I told you yesterday, stop giving him the Starbucks to wash the twinkies down with, okay?

Now go wash the dishes before I get home.
Go on now!

turn the tv off. turn the radio off. get off the computer. actually pay attention to your kid when its nap time. lay off the sugary foods and drinks. making things calm when its nap time and being calm urself does wonders with naptime. otherwise just let your kid wear himself out and go to sleep on his own. ive noticed with my kid if i mentally picture myself very calm and relaxed, close my eyes and just chill while im tryin to get him to sleep (hes 5 months) that he will go to sleep a lot quicker

haha....I would guess TV and sugar are the reasons. Probably warm baths and reading stories together will help.
