Here are some symptoms. Not everyone with depression has all of them and it depends on how serious it is. ->
You feel miserable and sad.
You feel exhausted a lot of the time with no energy .
You feel as if even the smallest tasks are sometimes impossible.
You seldom enjoy the things that you used to enjoy-you may be off sex or food or may 'comfort eat' to excess.
You feel very anxious sometimes.
You don't want to see people or are scared to be left alone. Social activity may feel hard or impossible.
You find it difficult to think clearly.
You feel like a failure and/or feel guilty a lot of the time.
You feel a burden to others.
You sometimes feel that life isn't worth living.
You can see no future. There is a loss of hope. You feel all you've ever done is make mistakes and that's all that you ever will do.
You feel irritable or angry more than usual.
You feel you have no confidence.
You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person. You may also feel guilty sometimes about being critical of others (or even thinking critically about them).
You feel that life is unfair.
Your sleeping patterns change- you have difficulty sleeping or wake up very early in the morning and can't sleep again or you sleep all the time.
You feel that life has/is 'passing you by.'
You may have physical aches and pains which appear to have no physical cause, such as back pain.
Your eating habits change (eat more or less than usual).
You might want feel overly guilty or worthless
You might want to hurt yourself physically or commit suicide
If the last one is true, help should be sought out immediatley (although in my experience, if someone's really suicidal and not just in need of attention, they don't want to seek out help or tell anyone- not a good thing.)

It's not true that "you will know if you're depressed." There are many symptoms of depression that may seem like something else entirely. It can be a hard condition to diagnose, even for medical professionals. Please talk to a doctor about this soon -- there are many many effective treatments for depression and it's very important that you get some help!

Actually you can just type in "depression tests" on your search engine and it will direct you to online depression tests. I diagnosed myself that way. But I was also diagnosed by a doctor after I took the test.

Depression is a state of mind not a mental disorder.
Remove yourself from the situation that depresses you. If the alternative is worse then putting up with depression...Then mock, get angry, realize you have the right to be happy, ignore - what ever it is.
Sounds easier then it is - I know.

There are several online questionaries you can take to get you rolling, you can talk to a doctor or someone who is already depressed for help. I am sure yahoo has support group chat rooms as well for emotional support.
