This child sounds as though its going to be an 'inconvenience' for your friend. Why did she not take precautions if she intended to finish her schooling? Surely she shouldn't have got pregnant in the first place yet. But again, its ok, because us working people will pay all our taxes to help these single mums out!!

Put all the info together. What care is really out there. Don't expect Social Services to pick up the mess. Put in front of her the reality of having a child. The financial commitment, the parental commitment, the fact that she will probably need to give up uni if she doesn't have any support, the fact that she will have the responsibility of the child for the next 18 years. Child minders can be difficult to find and expensive. University have creches....but I got my creche space once my degree was finished...too late, I had to make my own arrangements while I waited for a space. She needs to sit down and think it through properly before it's too late. You don't get a temp place to leave your child until you're ready to look after it. The commitment has to be there from the beginning, not on a whim! Just because she needs to finish uni won't be a good enough reason for Social Services. If she wants this child, she has to do right by this child from the beginning.

Child care assistance is available in many states. It is a program offered through the government specifically designed for low income families. In the state that I reside, a person is able to receive child care assistance if one is either working, or a full-time student. Advise your friend to look into these options. That way she will be able to continue going to school, while baby is being watched. Now, if your asking about a facility where she can have her baby live for a year, and then once she graduates she can come back for baby .... ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Sorry, but the world doesn't work that way. Unfortunately, these are things that should have been considered before hand. Having a baby may makes things a little harder, and a bit different, but finishing school and having a baby is definitely do-able.

Talk to someone at the schools student services, they may know some options for additional fin aid, housing, child care (especially if the school has child education degrees) they might have a center on site where students work. The earlier the better, these kinds of places sometimes have waiting lists especially when offereing assistance.

Yes, social services will arrange fostering care for the baby. However, its a lot better to care for your own child, and universities do have creche care for students' babies while they're studying, plus support. State nurseries also have places for needy babies from birth onwards, and she could be eligible. Uni's have their own health care with counsellors and nurses/clinics......they are there for students to visit with problems such as this. The nurse is there to help and knows what is available in these situations. Point your friend in this direction.
