That depends on where you're going to be seeing the race from.

If, like most of us, the best you can afford is the infield, dress appropriately for a picnic. Kentucky in May can be warm or cool, wet or dry, windy or still, so take in the forecast 24 hours ahead of time and dress appropriately.

If you're in the infield, you won't have any place to sit except what you bring-- folding chairs or a blanket. And you want to plan on getting there early, or you may find you have no place to set up.

If you're in the stands with a place to sit down, you have your options as to how dressy you want to be, although it tends towards the casual.

It's only when you get into Turf Club territory that dress code matters. If you're going to be seeing the race from a Turf Club location or one of the luxury boxes (lucky you!), you might want to call the clubhouse for some guidance on dress.
