We have litter box trained our male pug, he is about 4 months, he always squats to pee, and I'm GLAD he does, but I was wondering will he always do this, or will he start lifting his leg to pee? I can't imagine him hitting his mark in the litter box if he lifts leg...is there any way I can keep him squatting forever? I know this sounds stupid, lol.

I have a male dog as well and he squats too. He's two now and he still does. I wouldn't worry about it. I think he'll continue to pee that way just like my dog. I know it sounds dumb but I like it too.

I have a 17 month old Great Dane that still squats, as far as I know they'll keep squatting as long as they don't find spots where other males have lifted their legs. The only time my boy ever lifts his leg is when it's wet out and he pees on the side of the house trying to stay under the eave!!! Argh!!! I had a 2 year old rotti/lab that squatted from the day he was born!!

well, i have two dogs, one 4 yrs old and the other one 6. when they were both puppies, they used to squat to pee anywhere. i also trained them to pee in a litter box with a puppy diaper. they still squat to pee there now but from time to time the older one lift his leg. so it's just a matter of how your dog pees in it after he starts to lift his leg. i would say you should use some positive reinforcement like treats and stuff and not so much punishment because it could "traumatize" your dog. good luck with it!

In alot of cases male dogs will squat to pee until they are 6-12 months old. I have a yellow lab who still to this day will squat to pee if he has to go very badly. It is possible that your dog will continue to do this. The male dog lifts his leg once he learns that if he does not he get urine on himself. If you dog is not getting urine on himself when he pees then there is a good chance that he may never lift his leg.

My lab is about 3 1/2 yrs old and only lifts his leg on trees. He squats most of the time to pee. It IS great. But, he's fixed, I think that has something to do with it.

I know how you feel...my little Boston started lifting his leg at one year and I almost cried....my little guy is pad trained. I just make sure it rides up the wall though he still usually squats on the pads in the house. He usually lifts outside and only lifts inside on the pads when he is keyed up and being a butt head. You will probably notice him doing it outside on walks way before he does it in the house so I would look into putting a pad on the wall by the box if he does start doing it inside...

Male puppies tend to squat. When they get around 8 months old, their male hormones will start to kick in and they might start lifting their leg. If you get your dog neutered before 8 months old, they tend to stay "squatters" and will not mark their territory like dogs do that aren't fixed by this age. I have a male boxer who i got fixed when he was 5 months old and he squats more than he lifts his leg. its an advantage because they dont have to "mark" their territory like most un-neutered male dogs. Getting them neutered at such a young age is also an advantage because it reduces the risk of getting certain cancers and health problems later on in life. I recommend neutering at a young age. It has many advantages plus your dog has a better chance of living longer.

When my dog was younger he did the same thing. When he got older, though, he did start to hike his leg.
If you fix your dog at an early age, then he should always squat. We did not fix my dog, and so he lifts his leg (though I wish he didn't. He always ends up peeing on himself!). The extra 'baggage' makes it harder for him to squat!

My dog was neutered at a very young age. The pet store told us that he would never know that he was a boy and would always squat. He is over a year old and still has never hiked up his leg.

Hmm... Do you also take him for walks? When he gets older and his balance improves, then he will start doing the NATURAL thing, lift his leg when peeing. By that time he will also be able to hold his pee for a longer period of time and he will be able to wait for you to come home and take him for a walk. But please! Let the dogses have a natural developement!
