Our little guy who will be 3 in January is having some real issues with the potty training. We've been getting him to sit on the potty as often as possible but it is a struggle to get him there. He was really interested at first but soon lost interest and has gotten lazy I think. He knows when he has to go but just can't hold it long enough to get to the bathroom. He will however go if you put him in the bathtub he will make a point to stand up and tell you he is about to go...gets into position...and goes.

So what are we doing wrong to get him to do "normally". He is so proud of himself when he does go in the potty but it's he can't be bothered most of the time. We've tried the little reward system with the stickers & such but it was only fun for the first time or two. Any ideas to help us along? (and yes we've even had potty parties when he does go)

You could try to get daddy more involved in this. Have him take your son in the bathroom and be a "big boy" like daddy. Also, try having a reward box with toys that he picks out from the store instead of stickers. Take him to the store and have him pick out a bunch of little toys and tell him that the only way he can get them is if he goes potty on the pot. It worked for my daughters. If he's gonna be three soon, then he's more than ready. He understands the concept and that's all he needs. Sometimes it just takes longer to sink in that he would rather be dry than wet. Be patient, though, that's the most important thing.

When I potty trained my son I took him to the bathroom every 15 minutes. Each day I increased the time. He was potty trained within 4 days.

I know this sounds kind of silly, but when my son was a bout two years old we would let him run around the house naked. That's how he learned when he had to go. Then after about a month or so he was fine to put underwear on him. He was diaper free by 2 1/2 years old.

Make a game out of it. Throw some cheerios into the bowl and tell him to sink the enemy boats! Have daddy show him and have mommy inquire how many boats were sunken. Last you need to celebrate and slap high fives. Sounds silly, but silly works.

Sprinkle cheerios in the potty and tell him it's a game...he's gotta sink 'em by peeing on them. Sounds nutty, but it works, kids like games.

Try floating "Cheerio's" cereal in the toilet. Make a game of it and have him try to "sink" the Cheerio's. He might be more excited about going in the toilet if it is fun for him.

Your son is not having toilet training problems, you are.
He's not ready. Don't push it. Just keep presenting opportunities.
