It is a beautiful shade tree but I'm at wits end in seeking a solution to my problem. A local tree nursery tells me that they don't have an answer. In winter, here in CA it drops blossoms,in spring fruit which contains tannic acid, and a brown stain. In summer we get seed pods all of which keep me very busy. Any proven ideas?

This is an Osage orange tree, also known as the hedge apple. The wood was highly prized by the early French who called it bo d'arc or wood of the bow - the origin of the word Ozark. As far as I know livestock will not feed off of the tree although I have seen old cows pick them up and chew on the dried 'apples'. We used to have them in several pastures. The fruits are not edible but dried they can be used to keep bugs and small rodents away. At least that was a common belief and use when I was growing up.

I would suggest using a concrete sealer, several coats.I also would grind and sell the the tree by-products as a furniture stain and Polish.By keeping the tree it increases your homes value. Also decreases your cooling costs of your home.

I'm guessing if you pluck the flower buds of in the spring and prevent pollination, that would stop any fruit production.
