Two reasons. First it's an instinct from the time dogs were wild and lived in woods and meadows. The wild meadow was a better sleeping place because it had tall grass. But first the grass had to be matted down to make a comfortable bed. The matted place was kept as small as needed, so the surrounding tall grass would shelter from the wind.
The second reason for circleing was to feel for rocks that would make the bed uncomfortable.

Good Question..
My boxer spins in circles for about a minute or so before he lies down. I guess he wants to find the most comfortable position?

Everyone that said "they're getting comfortable" or "matting down the long grass" is wrong. Dogs spin to check for danger. When a dog is spinning naturally (in the wild) anything below him, (snakes, posinous spiders, etc.) would move out of they way. If he lays on them, they will bite his body straight off. Yes, occasionally they may bite his leg or paw, but is a lot less likely if he's moving.

Dogs are like us. When we lay down in our beds, we move around to be in the best confortable position. Dogs, they spin in circles before they lay down to be in a confortable spot.

As far as i know, Dogs did learn this from pre historic times but it is naturally to avoid the wind! they spin to see which direction the wind is blowing so they can put their back to it. You wouldnt like to be blown in the face with cold air when your sleeping would you? And for the grass i dont know about that, i dont really think thats an instinct. It sounds reasonable though but from what i've been told its for the wind!

When they were in the wild, they may have slept in tall grasses! They needed to flatten the grass before they laid down! That is now why they spin in circles before they lay down!

Imagine the dog in a field of tall grass.

The circular motion would mat down the grass for bedding.
