This sort of discrimination goes back a long way, and applies across many cultures.
Back in the day, most societies were split into nobles and peasants. The peasants worked all day in the sun, and the nobles spent all day inside, out of the heat and under their roofs. It was a given that a peasant would always be tan, and a noble would always be pale-skinned.
This manifests itself in a sort of "subtle racism" that pervades modern society; we unconsciously associate dark skin with poverty, and light skin with wealth.
It's an old, outdated way of thinking, and thankfully seems to be dying. Who knows what people are really thinking under their exteriors though. Look at Michael Richards.

it depends I think on the preference of the person. These days, especially it being winter, everyone's going to be in their houses mostly or online. So....that means more paler people coming out.
But also, people liked the movie Snow White and white skin I guess (in the olden days) was viewed as more beautiful or lovely.

I have a natural olive skin tone and to me that looks healthy and beautiful on other people. Paleness = sickly to me. I don't know....people are wierd. I guess it's just a trend now.
