They are just like folder tabs that you leaf through in a file cabinet. Each tab has different things on it. It's a way of organizing information.

Do you mean the 'tabs' button? If you press 'Tab' and 'ALT', you can browse to minimized folders or files in a snap.

If its in the Internet Explorer than its to save desktop space, other wise its a wasy to organize folders while saving space again
