the painful past being brought up in pieces in casual conversations and other social interactions? When one wants to move on while learning from mistakes or bad things afflicted by others, one may not want to discuss such matters and hide them or alter them. I'm not talking about flimsy embarassing moments, but huge incidents or chronic occurrences. Is it immoral or unfair to lie about things if they're not necessary to be known, like for a job interview, club application etc. and only wanted to be known in casual affairs like between friends, strangers, lovers?

It's okay to want to keep private matters private. You should feel no obligation to disclose past mistakes, unless it's relevant to something or someone in your life now. And on those occasions when you deem it necessary to share such mistakes, it's a good idea to add that you learned from that mistake. Good Luck
