be the right way to calculate how healthy you are when it does not take any factor of muscle weight ? Im 6'1 and 235 pounds. My BMI is 31 which indicates that I am overweight and could risk having any number of deseases( which I believe is a crock because anyone could get any type of desease at anytime regardless of health) . but that doesnt mean that i am not healthy.

Please explain!

BMI is a wast of time , and if you lift weights and a lot of muscle mass you will be considered obese by the BMI tables , a better indicator is Body Fat % , have your tested by a personal trainer, and see what your BF% is 15-18% is an excellent % to have, if you want to have that six pack look you'll need to get your BF% below 10%. One other thing do not use one of those scales that does BF%, they are very inaccurate.

BMI is not used for people with athletic physics. It is more of a general guideline for the average person to use.

From the CDC website:

"It is important to remember, however, that BMI is not a direct measure of body fatness and that BMI is calculated from an individual’s weight which includes both muscle and fat. As a result, some individuals may have a high BMI but not have a high percentage of body fat. For example, highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness. Although some people with a BMI in the overweight range (from 25.0 to 29.9) may not have excess body fatness, most people with a BMI in the obese range (equal to or greater than 30) will have increased levels of body fatness."

I think the BMI is ridiculous.. I am male, 6'3'' 225 pounds and according to the BMI I am 28.1 on their scale..According to them I am on the high end of "overweight". I think this is pretty ridiculous.. I am active, I eat well, dont smoke etc. The BMI doesn't take into effect build, ethnicity and a variety of other factors..I wouldnt worry about what the BMI says.

I have to agree BMI is not an accurate measure of a healthy weight for an athletic person. muscle weighs more than fat
