I get so angry when i see thes stupid ar groups bash greyhound racing! And so many people are misinformed by being told that breeders abuse and kill their dogs. In my 15 years of greyhound breeding I HAVENT SEEN 1 CASE OF IT.

I do praise these ar groups for adopting the dogs BUT they like to exaturate things. And for you people who answered that are against racing- where is your evidence. HAVE YOU SEEN AN ABUSED DOG AT A TRACK? I think not!

And for you St.Lady, just because someone cheats at a sport doesnt mean you have to take it away from all of us! Like When marthat stewart cheated the stock market, doesnt mean you gotta shut the whole thing down. treat her individually, if these people want to rally against racing then have them look for those minimal people that abuse and euthenize their dogs! And as far as the minimum treatment, haha, if you bought a brand new ferarri would you beat the crap out of it and never wash it. If you have an investment then you have to treat it the best you can. Of coarse thats being logical!

Sorry bout that st.lady i tried to shorten the additions by adding them to your reply. But if you read my DETAILS in my question mabye YOU would see how i know that it exists by saying you cant take it all away if one does somehting wrong! You might want to put a little more time thinking about your answers.

I deal with this constantly. I have three retired racers and foster for our adoption group. We are at the track REGULARLY picking up dogs that have retired and I have yet to see one come off the track not in absolutely top condition. And I can't tell you how many trainers/kennel workers/etc. cry buckets when a dog leaves. The dogs themselves love to run or they retire early - I have a case of both in my house. One of my girls did not enjoy the rigidity of kennel life and she retired before she ever raced. Another had over 130 starts and ran til she was five years old. She was depressed for months after her retirement, and while she enjoys home life now, she lights up everytime she gets to go to a track (and god forbid she goes back to her track/kennel - she kisses her old caretakers and completely forgets about us!).

When I lived in Florida we went to the track and saw the Greyhounds race. It is just like any other animal occupation . There are those that care for their dogs and horror stories of those that don't. I believe some dogs love doing it and are kept in healthy cared for environments and for every one like that there is some idiot that doesn't do it right. If people can make a buck at it there will always be those that abuse it......................................Who the hell said it should be taken away from everyone.? read my answer, I too went to the track, I saw well taken care of animals and others that looked like s**t. Nowhere in my statement did I say It should end racing. But, if your naive enough to think that dogs have never been abused in the sport Grow Up. There are those..So called breeders, owners, show people, racers and anyone else that can profit from the use of any type of dog have abuse it.

I didn't realize that the HSUS and greyhound rescue groups were "stupid AR groups". I don't understand why you people get so upset that people want to protect the *welfare* of animals. I wouldn't trust anyone who gets angry at these mostly volunteer groups whose main purpose is to prevent the blatant abuse of animals. Shame on you for being *for* the abuse of animals.

As far as greyhound racing goes - the dogs are generally well bred and given great minimal care. Greyhounds are the only large breed animal with no hip dysplasia - this is thanks to the strict breeding for the racing field.

However, I have read about breeders who beat their dogs to death when they don't perform well. Breeders who 'euthanize' otherwise healthy dogs whose track careers are over and cannot produce offspring. The greyhound rescue groups are for placing these animals in homes rather than killing them. How can you be upset at that?

Most of these track animals are never socialized. Many do not even know how to use stairs. They are difficult to potty train. They have enormously high prey drives. They can be scared of people and other non-greyhound breeds. They have no idea what is in the world outside of a 3x4 cage. Greyhound rescue groups work to socialize the animals so that they can be adopted. I can't imagine anyone being against that. And is the behaviour of the breeders and racers abuse? It's borderline. Confining a social animal to a cage for it's entire life is not exactly a good thing.

Just because you've never seen what you consider abuse, and I take this with a serious grain of salt that you consider abuse what most normal people consider abuse, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I've never seen the Hope diamond, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

The one I really scratch my head at is the "they are forced to run". LOL!!! They LIVE to run!!! How the heck do they think they could force a dog to run anyhow, either the drive is there or it isn't. Another one is the "they are specially trained". LOL! Yeah, you let em go, and they run!

*Some* of the GH rescues are good, a friend of mine got a retired racer from one that encourages adopters to run their Hound. MOST, however, do not! ARlites, at best. When north California had that ridiculous OFC ordeal last summer, the rescues stated things like "THOSE GH's are specially trained" and "most GH's aren't like THOSE dogs". They sold THEIR OWN BREED (and mine as well) down the river, and I won't EVER forget that!

*Most* racing Hounds are treated very well, there are some bad people in ANY sport. Almost ALL retired GHs are either adopted out or head off to a breeding farm.

The misguided notion that the are all caged and starved is just plain stupid. To do decently with a running Hound they have to be assertive and socialized (not beaten and scared), rock hard physical shape (not stuck in a cage) and fed a quality high protein diet (not starved). They are athletes, and to think they could be beaten, caged, and starved, and run well, is just plain stupidity coming from people who have no knowledge of running Sighthounds.

Stalkers - " I don't understand why you people get so upset that people want to protect the *welfare* of animals."

HSUS is NOT animal welfare, they are animal RIGHTS, and there is a HUGE difference between the two.

"mostly volunteer groups...prevent the blatant abuse of animals."

No, they are against the *USE* of animals, including 'Fluffy' on your couch. PERIOD.

"Shame on you for being *for* the abuse of animals."

Shame on YOU for being *for* the end of all pet ownership.

"The HSUS is probably the worst AR group out of all. They don't help dogs, they just work at legislating them out of existence.

I agree. People generalize their views on things based on one sad story they saw on the midnight news one night about an abusive greyhound breeder. A breeders dogs are his livelyhood, so tell me why he would do anything to harm his main source of income. The fact is most of these animals live better than I do. Greyhound racing is not cruel, it's a very competitive sport.

while there ARE dogs that are abused, there are those who are praised all the time. my vet addopted one of the abused ones. it had been a champion runner, then it started losing all the time and the owner beat the crap out of the dog reguarly. thankfully he got rid of it and she was able to rescue it, its so sad seeing such a big dog being so timid around people, but it has made some amzing progress.

but its like that in horse racing too from what i've heard, its just the sad fact that there are people out there that dont care about the animals other than the fact that they make money off of them, and its those animals that suffer.

What happens to the greyhounds once their racing careers are over?
My sister and brother in law have adopted their second Greyhound, and she is the nicest dog you'd ever want to meet, as was their first one who passed away last year. And they don't really bark at all. They're really sweet animals.

I persoanlly consider that it's transparent that this trendy age has turn out to be egocentric. People lie, sure that is actual they usually get irritated whilst they're lied two considering each natural feeling individual does. But they're egocentric considering they just consider approximately what has been performed to them. now not what the do to otheres. Honestly..u are entitled to get irritated considering u are harm and u are human..however might be the sector demands to consider approximately their impact on others within the system.

I know nothing about greyhound racing, but I do know that the AR groups perpetuate lots of myths about all areas of animal activities to further their agenda.

Stalkers, the HSUS *IS* an AR group.

Greyhound racing is like horse racing. Except one is a dog and the other a horse.
