Whenever I ask my dad a question he goes on into a LONG detailed account of like what it dates back to and who was the first person to find the answer when I just need a yes or no answer! Is he the only dad that does this? Please tell me if your dads do this.

Good Dads always give straight answers. My dad always said that if I plucked up the courage to ask a difficult question I would deserve an honest answer, and he did. Much to my mothers horror at times.

Sometimes there isn't a yes or no answer.

"Dad can I go out tonight "? Cannot be given a direct answer.
"Dad can I go out tonight and f**k all the local football team". can be given a straight answer. Like , "Will you charge each one or do a job lot".
"Dad can I sleep with your girlfriend"? will get a yes/no answer.

Think carefully before you ask Dad a question, Give him enough information to give a yes/no answer. Then if he goes into auto - babble mode just ask "Is that a Yes or a No"?

Last note. Is your Dad too afraid of your Mum to give any answer at all.

Well, now that's just because he wants to pass on some of his vast knowledge to you. You should really be greatful he cares enough to talk to you like that. You see, long ago, when children asked questions, people were too tired to answer so they just brushed them off. Then there came the great ban on asking questions, people weren't allowed to question any thing. This lasted for almost three hundred years. Your dad is just trying to take advantage of the fact that he is allowed to answer things for you. You should be greatful, not sarcastic. (Get it?)

my father used to do this to. hes gone now and i have fond memory's of his story's, and there was a lot of information in those story's that i use for games of trivia. so even though u just want a yes or no answer let him talk and listen as some day u will miss it. hes just doing what a dad is supposed to do and give u his knowledge.

It is just your dads way of trying to impress you with his knowledge; you see, the older you get, the more you are out on your own, the more parents feel less relevant in their childrens lives. Your dad is just trying to let you know that he wants to be important in your life, and to help you. Don't feel put out by it; give him a hug, and thank him. Remember, he is not always going to be there.

umm, maybe you should stop complaining about it and listen to him, you might learn a little extra, older people have already lived through a lot of situations you havent and often have a vantage point that you can't really get to until you've had those life experiences

know the concept of the answer is better than knowing the answer itself

its so natural for older ones to explain things. Coz they thought you won't understand. Thats the reason they make a long, broader and clearer way to you to understand. They think they are more "experienced". Sometimes its goes to a lot of links, and another and another and so forth....

that's what we do.
actually, he is probably quite honoured to be asked and wants to give a full an answer as possible.
either that or you are asking questions that require a long response but being a kid you want an easy answer to everything
