I plan to use the 2mg Nicorette gum next month and just wanted to compare. Thanks everyone and Happy Holidays!

Congratulations on your initiative to quit smoking. I quit 3 and a half weeks ago, as a pack a day smoker. I used the 21 mg patch for about 6 days and decided I didn't need it anymore.

Here is some info I found regarding the gum:

Nicotine Gum:5

Nicotine gum delivers nicotine to the brain more quickly than the patch however, unlike smoke, which passes almost instantaneously into the blood through the lining of the lung; the nicotine in the gum takes several minutes to reach the brain. This makes the "hit" less intense with the gum than with a cigarette.
Nicotine gum is not designed to be chewed like normal gum. Rather it is used in the "chew and park" method. When you insert a piece of gum into your mouth, chew it a few times to break it down, then park it between your gum and cheek and leave it there. The nicotine from the gum will make its way into your system via the blood vessels just under the lining of the oral cavity. If you continue chewing without parking, the nicotine will be released directly into the saliva in your mouth, which will eventually be swallowed, leaving you with a nasty stomachache and a craving for a cigarette.
Nicotine gum contains enough nicotine to reduce the urge to smoke. The over-the-counter gum is available in 2mg doses (for smokers of 24 or fewer cigarettes each day) and 4mg doses (for smokers of 25 or more cigarettes each day). One piece of gum is one dose; maximum dosage should not exceed 24 pieces per day.
Nicotine gum helps take the edge off cigarette cravings without providing the tars and poisonous gases found in cigarettes. It is a temporary aid that reduces symptoms of nicotine withdrawal after quitting smoking.
Nicotine gum must be used properly in order to be effective. Steps for nicotine gum users include:
Stop all smoking when beginning the nicotine gum therapy.
Do not eat or drink for 15 minutes before using, or while chewing the gum (some beverages can reduce its effectiveness).
Chew the gum slowly on and off for 30 minutes to release most of the nicotine. Parking the gum between the cheek and gum allows the absorption of nicotine into the lining of the cheek.
Chew enough gum to reduce withdrawal symptoms (10-15 pieces a day but no more than 30 a day).
Use the gum every day for about a month or so, then start to reduce the number of pieces you chew a day, chewing only what you need to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Discontinue use of gum after three months.
If the gum sticks to your dental work, stop using it and check with your medical healthcare professional or dentist. Dentures or other dental work may be damaged because nicotine gum is stickier and harder to chew than ordinary gum.
The average retail price for nicotine gum is approximately $4.50 (10 pieces) a day for average usage during the first six weeks of use.6

Every different brand of cigarettes have different levels of nicotine. Maybe you can check the brands websites though i doubt there would be any information regarding their nicotine levels. Do net searches on reports. I'm sure there are tons. Try "Nicotine Report" on Google. But anyways you're on the patch which only means you have plans to stop. My advise, don't bother so much about how many mg's of nicotine there are on the cigarette. Just focus on getting rid of this fatal habit. Good luck.

I like the gum, although it is true you need to "chew and park" or you will end up with stomach issues over time. when I first quit I chewed about 10-15 pieces daily, and I mean chewed, chewed chewed that gum!! The patches always "sweat" off of me and Chantix makes me crazy and depressed. The hypnosis tapes make me want to smoke. I "absently" tried the vapor cigs but they make me cough and make me want a real cigarette. I also read that since they are not FDA regulated, the additives in them can be quite lethal PLUS they can explode in your face and that little battery can take off like a 22 caliber bullet. PLUS, they do not break the wondrous habit of holding and lighting a cigarette and inhaling smoke and blowing smoke out. I used a breathing device the dr gave me when I felt like smoking, I inhaled and exhaled deeply 5 to 6 times. If I didn t have that I used a straw and inhaled/exhaled in similar manner. That seemed to solve the issue of inhaling.

Back to the gum, I worry that I am addicted to the gum, 3 months later but take comfort in the fact that I have not smoked. Let me repeat, after 50 years, I have not smoked in 14 weeks. I also take comfort in the fact that I do not chew as much gum as I did in the beginning. I am down to about 4-5 pieces of 2 mg a day if I work that day, and if I am at home, maybe 1-2 pieces. I think I can go without the gum now, but I do like the taste of the cinnamon gum. And the bottom line, anything that I can use that will keep me from lighting a cigarette and smoking it I will use. I do not want to smoke again.

All the quiting aids on the market contain about half of what you get in a normal day for example if you were to use the patch 21mg That is about 1/2 what you would get per day if you were a heavy smoker. The gum is even lower if you are a heavy smoker (like I was) use the 21mg patch and augment it with the gum through out the day as needed.

Each cigarette delivers around 1 mg of nicotine...70 mg is fatal;

chewable tobacco delivers about 4.5 mg of nicotine

a pinch of snuff between the cheek and gums gives you 4.5 mg.

However keep in mind you are multiplying the 1 mg by the number of cigs you smoke in a day.

In addition to nicotine, cigarette smoke is primarily composed of a dozen gases (mainly carbon monoxide) and tar. The tar in a cigarette, which varies from about 15 mg for a regular cigarette to 7 mg in a low-tar cigarette, exposes the user to an increased risk of lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial disorders.

I am sure that depends on the brand of cigarette you smoke. Check the pack (but don't buy one if you're already out!!). I applaud you for planning to quit. If you really put your willpower into it, you CAN quit. I'm pulling for you!

Depends on the cigarette. Find the website for the cigs you smoke, and they should have it listed there.
