Although almost every bullet proof vest on the market today is made out of DuPont brand Kevlar (a synthetic fiber created in 1965), many vests today use ceramic inserts to further reduce the force of the bullet's impact. This is because a straight up kevlar vest still takes a bullet with the force of a 95 mph fastball, easily breaking ribs and causing some injuries(but non life threatening). The ceramic inserts are specially built to crack as the bullet impacts, with each new crack absorbing some of the bullet impact, and thus the wearer feels the force, but nothing else. Ceramics are becoming more common, and now the new 'dragon skin' armor is almost completely ceramic disks in a supporting kevlar vest. Kevlar is a great material, but most police and army personnel prefer ceramics as well, if for no other reason than the lack of pain.

Kevlar is the DuPont Company's brand name for a particular light but very strong aramid fibre. It was created in DuPont's labs in 1965 by Stephanie Kwolek and Herbert Blades, and Phil Thier and was first used commercially in the early 1970s. It can be spun into ropes or sheets of fabric that can either be used as-is, or used in the construction of composite components. It is now used in a wide range of applications - from bicycles to body armor - due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. It is 5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis.

Duponts composite carbon synthetic fibers. There is also specta and newer materials that are better like a liquid magnetic metal that unlike carbon fibers does not lose it's tensil strength after being hit by projectile(s). Also there are ceramic plates that are covered in kevlar, but resist high velocity rounds from rifles.

Kevlar is a composite material (as carbon fiber and fiberglass), made up of fibers and matrix. this composite material has the same resistance of steel weighting only 1/3 (one third). It is used in aerospace structures and in armors for vehicles, for example there is a "plastic tank" that is a APC(armored personnel carrier)

Kevlar is a composite cloth made of synthetic fibers that is woven very very tightly. When a liquid resin is poured on it hardens. Just like fiberglass but stroger. I know it saved my life in Iraq!!!

Surprisingly enough, kevlar vests are made of kevlar.
Now, if only I can figure out what those wooden sticks are made out of.....
