Time for a trip to the Doc's.
Tumbler testing on the cheek won't work unless you press from the inside too, pinching the bruise from ether side of it works just as well - you are looking for it to go pale/white, which is okay. A meningitis rash (septicaemia) is usually flat, purply and small and doesn't go away when sqeezed.
I take it this hasn't just appeared in the last few minutes, and unless he has a very high temp and is difficult to rouse, or has difficulty in breathing I wouldn't worry about an ambulance. NHSdirect cannot see the bruise or your son over the 'phone - unfortunately. If he has no new symptoms today, I suggest seeing the Doctor as soon as possible. If he does have new symptoms today try speaking to your Doc - they will have some sort of 24 hour emergency cover. Just 'phone the surgery and generally there is a number or other directions on their answer machine. Failing that do chat to NHSdirect, but do check that bruise first.
Wish you both well.

Paul, a child 11 years old should be so full of energy, you almost need to tie them down to rest! The bruise could come from playing or something he just does not remember. I hate to ask, but is he in a home where he has to go between mother and father? If so does mother have men around or is married? If the boy is not physically ill from something, it could be more than meets the eye. Maybe there is a bully at school that is picking on him, so he acts sick to avoid it. Is his appetite good? Is he thin? is he tired all the time or just certain times of the day, week? A good physical with his pediatrician would be my first step, also you might check with his teachers and see if they notice anything different. A good way to see what is going on in a childs mind/life is to watch what they draw.....give him some markers and good paper and see how he expresses himself...ask him to draw pictures of his friends at school, his family, his home, what he likes to play....that could give you some insight. If you see lots of sad, stick people, or dark colors, he is repressing somethings. I had a stepson that always drew pictures of him hurting animals and fires burning his house...he is a real troubled young man now cause his father would not get him help. I pray for you and your son it is just a case of 11 year old blahs!

Find out how did he get the bruise. Is he saying he is tired and feeling unwell to avoid activities in or out of school. Consider bullying.
Keep an open mind and watch out for other bruises.
A G.P would be able to help in most cases, including bullying with the mental scars it may cause.
Or he is just having a growth spurt and fell over.
Good luck and give him a hug xx

Most probably nothing to worry about.
But you can't be too careful, just to make sure it's not meningitis (he'd probably have other symptoms too), press the bottom of a glass tumbler aganist the bruise. If it doesn't disappear, phone 999.
If you're still unsure, and want an answer tonight, phone NHS direct: 0845 46 47. They will ask you to describe symptoms etc: if they feel it appropriate they will call you out a doctor or ambulance.

I am not a doctor, nor anything remotely close. However, at the risk of scaring you, I would recommend that you take your son to your family doctor as soon as possible. Random bruising of the body as well as extreme fatigue can signify leukemia. I would get a second opinion as well. These are things we unfortunately cannot prevent, but if we keep on our toes we are able to contain them. My best wishes to you and my prayers.

Take a couple of hours and:
1) ask his teacher - is he getting along with the other kids at school?
2) speak to school counsellor or nurse - would they do an assessment and let you know?
3) make a doctor's appointment for blood tests

Sounds like he may be anemic. You want to get him to a doctor asap and has him checked out. Here is a website that you can look up his symptoms also so you have more info for his doctor.
Hope this helps and good luck

The bruise could be from a fall, maybe he passed out or felt faint and fell. You should take him to see a doctor, it could be a serious problem or it could be that he's not eating right. Try feeding him some healthy food.

Yes, take him to the doctor and let him talk to the doctor alone. I agree with the person who says he may be being bullied. Maybe he's tired and sick all the time to get out of going to wherever the bully is. Maybe he's embarassed to tell you but would confide in the doctor. Sounds like somebody hit him.
