Are you asking about Old books that concern similar material from the same time periods?
Or, specifically extra canonical biblical books?
When you look at the shepard of Hermes, it would have legitimately been bible worthy. But, At some level christians trust God for the preservation of the canon.
And at some level people have to realize taht none of the books were written to be part of the cannon. Each book stands on its own 2 feet. They are just in a good collection.
Modern day christians dont typically know much about history of christianity, the bible, or the church and are therefore somewhat ignorant on the topic. But, the 66 books stand up pretty well under their own weight...the canon issues are typically only issues because christians are ignorant...not becuase of actual manuscript problems.
I am a bible believer and I have read tons of extra-canonical books. If you belive in the bible and you compare other books from the time period to the bible you can at least come up with an analysis that tells you if a book is biblical. You can also use books in comparison to other books by the same supposed author and attempt to determine authorship.
There are a myriad of issues but most of them are cultural.

Books not included in th bible have mostly been edited out because they contain information that is dangerous in the hands of ordinary people.
Look at the conflicts we have with what is available.
The Vatican city archives hold the greatest amount of abridged biblical material.
They decide what we may or may not read.
Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Ya know-I have to tell you that one of my favorite books of all time is called "I Judas"; and it portrays a side of Judas that Bible believers would not believe-It is said to be the works of Judas as because he was a disciple too-he too was writing into text the word of his God-Remember he too thought Jesus was God-It is a very compelling story-Beyond that I would tell you that MY BIBLE is "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand-she wrote it about 40 years ago and everyone that reads it finds themselves very changed in their way of thinking as she delivers unto you how EGO is manifest in success and survival! If you also do her "Fountainhead" you will be thoroughly entertained as both books are absolutely great Love stories and challenges to the Human Spirit!
