He will have spells where it sounds like he's snorting or something but its really fast and he's trying to like breathe through his nose but he can't. His ears will also go back and he looks like he's scared. Then after about 4 or 5 minutes he's better. Does anyone know whats wrong with him.

I'd go see your vet to be sure to rule out medical issues . . . However, it sounds like something that happens to my grizzly paws sometimes. I asked the vet about it and they assured me it is most likely reverse hiccups. My grizz gets them if he gets overly excited, scared, or just startled. They told me to cup my hand over his nose/mouth for a few seconds . . remove . .. and repeat. I do this while talking to him in a calm voice. Works like a charm every single time!

Sounds like Your dog has what they call Kennel Cough.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection that often affects animals that are kept in a confined space such as boarding kennels, dog shows or veterinary hospitals or comes in contact with another dog that has it.

Symptoms include a persistent dry hacking cough or bouts of deep harsh coughing often followed by gagging, which may produce a foamy mucus.

Treatment:

Mild cases may improve without treatment (7-14 days). Or your vet can prescribe antibiotics which tend to relieve the animal's symptoms fairly quickly.
If you have other dogs or animals keep them seperated from this dog till its better (probly 14 days to be safe) And wash your hands after handleing your dog.

It's hard to tell for sure by your description, but it sounds like you're describing what is sometimes referred to as a "reverse sneeze". When trying to clear an obstuction in their sinuses, dogs will sometime snuff "in" very hard several times in a row, creating a loud honking noise.

If this only happens sporadically, it's not usually a big deal, but if it's chronic it may mean that something is lodged a sinus cavity.

If the "attacks" continue, get your dog to a vet as soon as you can. Things lodged in the sinus (like a pebble, a bit of food, or an awn from a weed) can cause all sorts of difficulties and may have to be surgically removed.

Has he been checked for heartworm? If he hasn't and he hasn't been on prevention-he MUST be checked BEFORE putting him on the preventative. If he has a heartworm infection and you give him the preventative-potentially you could kill your dog.

He could also have a hookworm infection. Hookworm larvae hatch in the ground, migrate through skin (foot bottoms) to the lungs, are coughed up and swallowed by the host. Take a sample of his poop to your vet to check for parasites.

Finally it is possible he has a heart condition.

At any rate you need to make an appointment.

It depends on the breed of the dog honestly. Like I have a shi-tzu and she does that alot, took her to the vet about it (she's been maintained on heartworm/flea and tick) and he said that it was just common for that breed to have upper respitory problems, so we just have to watch her really closely. I wish there was something more we could do for her, but the vet seemed to think it wasn't that serious, and that it was something that couldn't really be remedied,

He may be having breathing trouble, but he could also be having a type of seizure. My Peke is prone to seizure and they generally began by an episode like what you are describing.

He needs to go to the vet, so they can rule out severe health issues! He could have something stuck in his windpipe and be unable to get it out! There's no telling!

My dog has done this before. It sounds like the dog may have a cold, and he is snorting really bad to get rid of a blocked up nose. Try to keep him warm and take him to the vet.
