I have often wondered about this: why do we feel the need to search for a significant other? Is it about wanting to know someone else thinks we are special and beautiful?

Is it possible to be totally on your own for the rest of your life and feel genuinely happy and complete or will you always be searching for that special someone to complete your life?

No it is not about finding someone who thinks you are special and beautiful. It is more of a society based mentality, those who are not married or seeing someone are usually looked down upon, criticized, that in turn will cause someone to go looking for what society deems as acceptable. It also has to do with feelings as humans that we feel.

I feel that a person should not depend on another to feel complete. Not only is that tremendous pressure on the other person, I feel that it creates a sense of insecurity in the person who requires the relationship.
If a person does not feel complete or validated without his or her significant other, what happens if that other person leaves? He or she will have built their life with the other person as the foundation, then that foundation is broken. That just isn't fair to either party.
Many people think that the "I can't live without him or her" feeling is love. I feel that it places too many restrictions on love. If you do not know that you are beautiful and special, why would you believe someone else?
I feel that if you already know those things, and do not require such validation from another person, then your relationship will be more solid and more meaningful.
Not needing validation does not mean that one must spend his or her life alone. It just means that you could.

I choose not to alone. But I have made very poor choices because of fear and lack of self esteem.I feel that has a woman I am not good enough.I go after the handicap bad boys that I think I can save.If you are totally in touch with who you are yes you do not need anyone.Thank you and God Bless.

Of course it's possible to be happy and single. I sure am! If anything, having a boyfriend would make me feel like less of a person — as if I'm not good enough for me.

My life was complete before I met my SO. I was genuinely happy alone and I led a full life. He's just the icing on my cake :-)

You don't need someone to complete you. You have to be secure and happy with yourself first and when you find the right person that you can mold with you will be happier.

You don't need a man (or a woman) to define who you are. However, people do yearn for intimacy and companionship. I know some people stay in horrible relationships just because they don't want to be alone. Remember, you can do bad by yourself.

oh damn here it goes that typical chick type question.
Oh where is my love
Oh how will I find him
U were born on God's green earth without significant other and u are still alive today without significant other, then for sure u will be able to live without significant other.

In order to complete ur life, u need money, food, drink, house and phat bank account. Got it?
