Muslimah:
You word it well: "hype."
The author himself, has said very clearly his book is a work of fiction.
Its just a book.
It has nothing, but nothing to do with Jesus ....in reality!

U say ur avoiding the movie? I doubt it would b sinful to watch it. The theory that Jesus had a wife may b blasphemous to u bcuz that story is not in the Koran, but the movie does not show anything distasteful (like Jesus engaged in any kind of romantic overtures with Mary Magdalene) The book is a work of fiction yes, but the groups n organizations written about r real. Most do exist today or did in the past. There r some who hold to the "Jesus was married" theory even today. Anyway, ur missing out on a great book! It is rich in detail n history and is very fast paced. Very intriguing how they decipher the codes. I read the illustrated version, it was great to "see" what was written about. The movie was good but not as fast paced as the book n obviously all the details n explanations on history, art, and architecture could not all b included. I recommend the book.

The Davinci Code claims, in an ahistorical way, that Jesus was married, and that he was married to Mary of Magdala, the disciple "from whom seven demons were driven out."
It is a bunk assertion, drawn from a thousand year later apocryphal story about Mary moving to France. It should be noted that the Da Vinci code's assertions contradict both Christianity (which holds Jesus never married, and was totally devoted to his mission), and also Islam, which holds that Jesus will not take a wife until he returns to Earth at the time of the Mahdi.

The DaVinci Code is just a theory that someone came up with, that Jesus was married and had children, and they came up with this from the Last Supper painting that Leo DaVinci painted. It is completly fictional.

It's because the book and movie both say that the Catholic church is a liar and that Jesus married and had kids and it's a cover up and they kill people who discover the "truth". And there are people who are so susesptible to lies that they believe something that clearly states, "this book is fiction".
It's like the media showing all the bad Muslims and the world thinking that all Muslims are insane, bomb-wearing maniacs. Not true, but some people don't look past the lies to see the truth. They just want to hate something because the tv says its what you are supposed to hate.

It poses some interesting questions worthy of debate even though it is a fictional work.
Just enough historical fact & just enough good storytelling to make it an entertaining read.
The hype & flap over it comes from closed minded individuals who condemn the book without reading it , or if they have, are forgetting it is just a novel.

People love conspiracies and a good mystery. Despite what the literary snobs say brown has written a good book. It's not high art but it didn't set out to be. That some people take seriously what is clearly labled as fiction is more about them then brown's book.
