Would a .410 shot gun be alright to go turkey hunting with?

I would pattern my gun to see what kind of pattern its getting. I would make sure i was not making over a 40 yard shot either. Print you out a purportional sized pic of a turkey, and set it out at different distances and see what kind of pattern your getting with different shot. If you get 8 to 10 shot into the head, then you aught to be ok. Might be better to invest into a 20 ga though. Not much difference in recoil, and loads are much cheaper than a .410

A 410 is 45 cal and can be shot out of some 45 cal long colt that were designed for it. but not the (opposite). A 30 30 shell first would fall right through the barrel of a 410.the shell isn't even 45 cal and wouldn't hold in the chamber. Why would you want to anyway you can buy a 410 slug.

Absolutely NOT. I don't even think it would be a legal gun (I know for a fact in Wi, you cannot hunt turkey with one) You need to check your State laws ro find out. And IF it is legal. I would highly reccomend against it. I am a turkey hunter, and would never use less than a 12 guage. I even use 3 1/2 inch magnum loads. This spring I had a 27 pounder fly off after I shot it. I eventually found it and shot again. Moral to the story.... Turkeys are the toughest bird to kill. One took 3 arrows to finally kill.

i let my son carry a 410 the first year he turkey hunted with me . I backed him up with my 12. He got the bird. I had him called up to about 15 yards. ballistics of a single 410 pellet at the same distance as a single pellet fired from a 12 is actually more kenetic enegy. but less pellets and a loose patter at more than 30 yards. a lot of turkey hunters are carrying 3" 20's shooting number 5's and getting good results to 40 yards. personally my turkey slayer is 3.5 in 12 gauge benelli with a Gobblin thunber choke i have very very tight killing patterns at 55 yards using number 5's

Unless you are a good shot i would go with a higher shot load. You could just wound your target. I am not a hunter though so you should go with some of the other hunters word. I use my shotgun for getting racoons of the deck and a 410 is good enough for me for that.

At close range you would be alright, I prefer a 12 gauge for turkey hunting myself.
I am afraid with a .410 you may only wound a turkey.

TESTS HAVE PROVEN THAT THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE "POWER" OR PENETRATION BETWEEN THE 410, 20 OR 12 GA SHOTGUN
YOU ARE STILL WORKING OFF THE SAME PRESSURE LEVELS IN ALL SHOTGUNS WHICH IS WHAT PUSHES THE SHOT DOWN THE TUBE AND OFF ON ITS MERRY FLIGHT TO THE TARGET
THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE AMOUNT OF SHOT THAT YOU ARE THROWING OUT THERE.
THE MORE SHOT THE MORE CHANCE OF STRIKING A KILL ZONE
ON TURKEYS YOU SHOOT THE HEAD SO AS NOT TO DAMAGE THE MEAT
THE DIFFERENCE. IT'S NOT LIKE A 410 WILL BOUNCE SHOT OFF THE BIRD BECAUSE IT IS A SMALLER GAUGE, BUT THAT THE PATTERN OF SHOT WONT BE AS DENSE AS A 12 BECAUSE THERE SIMPLY IS LESS SHOT TO THE PATTERN WHICH MEANS YOU MUST BE MORE ACCURATE
SO YES YOU CAN USE IT. JUST BE PRACTICED TO MAKE SURE YOU WILL HIT YOUR TARGET

No, they don't have enough power, at least a 12 ga. with heavy shot! You might get lucky with the 410 but I wouldn't use it!

If that is all you have, you would want to get the bird as close as you could and take a head shot on it. Go with the heaviest load you can get. I would check the pattern it leaves at different distances so you will know what your chances are of killing the bird.

Personally, I would use a 12.
