I believe IN the Bible but I don't necessarily believe it. I think it's cool to have a book of collected ancient wisdom with a variety of ethical viewpoints expressed. It allows us to see what is different about life now and what hasn't changed at all.

I like the idea that some of it is obscure and counter-intuitive, and that there are some unlabelled "bad examples" included, so we can think about why we do some things and not others. (One of my favorite books is Judges, which starts out, "In those days there was no king in Israel and everyone did what he thought was right," then keeps repeating it as succeeding judges make worse and worse choices, until the words mean something entirely different.)

I DON"T like people who deify the book as some sort of infallible oracle and who twist it to justify oppression, greed, war and actions that are obviously wrong. The Bible itself warns about that kind of thing. That's another cool thing about it, it took long enough to compose that some writers could include the pitfalls of scripturemania. There are many stories and rants that distinguish between pious legalism and merciful justice, often in opposition to other passages.

Even if God does not exist, the scriptures argue about what God should be like. Some see God as a stern disciplinarian, others as a compassionate nuturer, but it's all laid out in the pages for consideration. That part about being "made in the image" of God hints about our obligations as human beings.

There are unpleasant parts, but they express the needs and values of the day. We can study and figure out why they were written as they were. We can find the reason and modify the lesson to fit our own time. In general, the messages of the Bible show us how to think beyond our narrow self-interests and see ourselves in interdependent relationship with the rest of humanity. Some might argue that the works of Shakespeare could serve the same purpose. They can, but the Bible has a vaster scope.

We all have a conscience, an instinct for right and wrong. Sometimes our consciences don't match each other or a course is unclear. The Bible provides examples that let us contemplate our behavior outside of the heat of crisis. We look for messages, not dead history, consequences, not characters. The stories are idealized, not literal. With exhortation, tragedy and humor, the Bible tells nothing more, or less, than the spiritual STORY of the "PEOPLE of God".

That's a very good question. Very recently, I was faced with the question "Does God Exist". I was truly confused. How can I believe in someone/something with no physical evidence? It is for the same reason that childrens' faces light up when they hear about Santa Clause visiting their house and run to bed hours early to make sure that they are asleep when he comes, and then lie awake, their excited minds unable to sleep. You know that a man in a red suit is not going to come down your chimney and give them presents.
But you know, deep down, that Santa Clause exists and he exists in the hearts and the minds of those children. For the same reason, I know that God exists.
It is a belief, based on feelings many people are not able to understand. When you read the words of the bible and get a feeling similar to when you were a child and believed completely in Santa Clause, you know.
It is something that can only be taught by God. Talk to god, read his words, feel his feelings, and you will decide for yourself. You will know if you listen and if you feel.

I believe that if God wants us to have His Word, He will protect it and preserve it. Some years ago when I had similar questions, I researched it. The thing that stood out so much is that we today have so many manuscripts for the Bible books. Old documents that have been here a long time. When you look at these, the number of them compared to other old, old works recorded from the same time periods is amazing. I believe God has and does preserved and protected it. Even look at the history of how many people and cultures have tried to destroy it. For me, we have GOD's WORD in the Bible.

First of all you will hear different people tell you that the Bible is written by men. I believe that the Bible (King James 1611) was written by men inspired of God. The KJV 1611 is our closest link to the original manuscripts (written in Hebrew and Greek languages) that is translated into English (though there are old English terms used in it). Now, I have said that to get to your question - "why do you believe in the Bible?"
In 1973 after listening to a series of evangelistic messages, I had a personal meeting with God. Did I see God? No. Did I hear God speak with my ears? No. The facts are that I felt His presence in my soul and in my heart, and I asked Him to forgive my sin. Minutes after that experience, I felt a sense of extreme peace in my soul - that is hard to explain to those who have not experienced it. In the following weeks, months, and years I have studied the Bible in detail attempting to find some of the "flaws" that some men say exist. I will admit that there are areas in the Bible that are difficult to explain as read literally, but with study and putting everything into the context as to why, where, and how it was said, I have concluded that there are no errors in the Bible (not even a typo). Also, there are many prophecies that have come to pass and things and conditions of this world predicted that are mentioned in the Bible. The Bible is God's instrument to teach us what we need to know to find encouragement during hard times. It includes a lot of what men call "common sense" advice on many subjects - the Bible is the source of common sense! I believe the Bible from cover to cover (at least the KJV 1611) and do not read the other versions for absolute translation - I always go back to the 1611. Can I prove that it is true? No. I feel that it is true in my heart and soul, and I have faith in God that He has preserved His precious Word for us to read, study, and share with others. I also belive that YOU (regardless of the fact that you declare yourself an agnostic) have the opportunity to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour just like I did, but you must do it by faith that Jesus was born, died, and was raised from the dead to pay for ALL our sins (past, present, and future), and, that by receiving Him, we will inherit eternal life. The end of this world as we know it is coming to an end (no man knoweth the hour, but the signs are clear to those who believe). Receive Jesus Christ before it is eternally too late. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess the name of Jesus in the day of our Lord. God bless you; I hope that you can find the saving grace that I found 33 years ago.

The manner and time in which it was written. (it was written over approx 1300 years, by people of all walks of life under the inspiration of God - to have a book like this be harmonious is statistically impossible without the divine intervention of God)

The harmony in the message from Genesis all the way to Revelation.

Prophecy, & the fact that all bible prophecy that has been fulfilled to date has been 100% accurate.

Archeological proofs.

What it says of itself. It is God-breathed

The central message of the bible - salvation through the Messiah - Jesus Christ.

Because the bible has proved itself over time. The things that are written in it have happened in history and just because some people don't want to research it's truth doesn't mean it is not true it just means that they're not interested in learning what it has to say. The bible is the only book that has been around for billions of years and the only book that told of our Lord. It gives people hope and it saves people so what is wrong with that? Some things are true whether you believe them or not. Truth scares people.

I don't believe in the Bible. I see it as a guide in life. It can be rather contradictory, but the overall message is a good one. I have never taken it literally. I believe in God because I have experienced too many things, tangible and intangible, that could have only come from Him. However, I don't expect anyone else to believe because of my experience.

I don't believe in the bible because too much of it sounds like a fairy tale. No one has been able to answer this question:

Adam & Eve had 3 sons, Abel, Cain & Seth. Abel was murdered. Cain & Seth had children. Who were their wives and where did they come from? Since Eve was the first & only woman God created, did she have children by her sons?

Also, I find it hard to believe Noah lived 950 years and Methusaleh lived for 969 years.

Well, to be quite honest, the first reason I got into Christianity was because of my parents, but I got sick of it and went and did my own thing for a few years.

When I got sick of that, I realized that I needed God, but I didnt know if it was the God my parents believed in. So I started researching.

The biggest reason for my believing in the Bible is because for all the talk and speculation against the Bible, there is still no concrete hard proof that it isnt true. No one can PROVE to me that the things didnt happen. The basis of Christianity is that God loves us, gave us freewill to love him back and we get to choose whether or not to do that. The fact that Jesus was so unselfish as to come down to earth and live as one of us for 33 years just to die because he loved us so much is compelling in itself. And all we have to do is accept the gift and love him back? Its amazing.

The Bible (Christianity) especially the New Testament (which is what we are to follow) is so clear on not having to do works to get into heaven, and not having to say a gazillion prayers to make it, it makes more sense as to how God truley would be. "Love me, and I'll love you back. " Its how a earthly father would treat his child too.

Anyway, the reason I choose to believe in the Bible is because it makes sense to me. It just makes me want to be a better person, and love God with all my heart. (Whats so wrong about that?)

I didn't believe anyone...I found out the truth by reading and studying the bible myself. I believe because I have seen the truth. It was God who changed me, it was God who converted me, and it was God who chose me. It was an awakening! Once you see the truth you can never deny it, that would be impossible. The Bible is truth.
