Talk to some lending institutions and get qualified for a loan, so you can know both how much in a house you can afford and so you'll be ready to make an offer when you find it.

You should first decide where you want to live. I, personally, like to live on or near public transporttion (bus) so I can take the bus to work in bad weather. The next step is to shop around for a house. It's a buyer's market right now so you can a lot to pick from.

know the market, know your credit score, know what you can afford and know the different kinds of loans available and how they will help or hurt you. Do not work with a friend. LOCATION is very important.
The VERY first step though is to have a JOB.

Honestly, do an internet search of what you should know. They will be throwing out a lot of terms, and you need to understand what those terms mean. I mean what exactly is a closing cost, escrow, and a whole bunch of other words. Be prepared, and please remember, this is YOUR money, YOUR house, YOU get what YOU want. Don't be pushed around by a bossy realtor, banker, or other lending institution. Good Luck!!!!

Make sure you have the best credit score possible, then start looking for a mortgage broker who can pre-approve you for a certain loan amount. Then start looking.
