try getting him a gift certificate for a resturaunt or somewhere that he really like to go that way he doesn't have to worry about putting it anywhere or him already having the same thing hiding in the back of a closet or something

my dad is the same and sometimes i don,t get nothing,but when i do i try to buy something he likes to collect and my dad likes his sports and i get his team hat or something with his team so try to get him something you think he would use or to do with something he likes.good luck and if can,t find anything then give him money or gift card.
