There is not that much that plants will do for the oxygen in your house, you can still pollute the air you breath and the plants may not be able to help much. But, psycologically, if you can care for plants, just as animals, or even other people, you are more likely to care for yourself and your own health.

The benefits of indoor gardening are numerous. The clean air provided by indoor plants that take in carbon dioxide (which you exhale) and in turn release oxygen for you. Indoor plants also brighten the room, providing a cheerful sight for those grey and often dreary winter days.
Indoor plants are an important part of decor in homes, offices and other buildings. By the way, I am sure you will agree that plastic indoor plants and shrubbery are no substitute for the real thing. And, another big benefit of indoor gardening is there is nothing more relaxing than gardening.

houseplants' contribution to air quality in the home is extremely small. The greatest benefit is the beauty and "companionship" of the plants. Like your dog, plants don't care if you whine and complain to them.

1. It actually increases the oxygen level in the immediate atmosphere.
2. The natural colors of green present in the plants has been shown to positively affect such things as blood pressure, anxiety levels, ability to sleep, etc. (hence the use of green as the preferred color of surgical suites).
3. Sometimes, you can eat 'em!!

Plants convert carbon dioxide (which you breath out) into oxygen (which you breath in). And they make you home feel more alive.

they help because humans breathe in oxygen and out carbon monoxide. well, plants breathe IN carbon monoxide and OUT oxygen, so basically carbon monoxide to them is like what oxygen is to us. does that make sense? if you breathe out carbon monoxide on a plant, they breathe it in and then they breathe out the oxygen, which you breathe in. without plants to give off oxygen, we would probably all suffocate. so there you have it
