A man has just come to a prison that night, and is lying in bed, when one of the other prisoners shouts out "43!" and, to the man's surprise, all the other prisoners begin to laugh hysterically. Then, a few minutes later another of the prisoners shouts "65!" and, sure enough, the others begin to laugh. This goes on for a few more hours, prisoners calling out number every few minutes and then laughing. So the next morning the man approaches one of the prisoners, Bob, and asks him what the number calling was all about. Bob tells him "Well, we're not allowed to tell any jokes in here, but someone managed to bring in a joke book and hid it under a floorboard in the toilets. Everyone has memorised the jokes and which pages they're on so every night some of us tell our favourite jokes by calling out the page number." The man in intrigued and desides to go into the toilets and find the book. Sure enough, under the floorboards is a huge joke book, with a joke on each page.

He finds a hilarious joke and memorises the page number, ready to call out that night. A few hours later, when everyone is in bed and the number calling has began, he feels it's the right time to tell his joke. He clears his throat as shouts "17!" but no one laughs. The man is annoyed and puzzled but decides not to worry and falls asleep. When he gets up the next morning he finds Bob and asks him why no one laughed at his joke. Bob says to him "Ah mate, it wasn't the joke, it was the way you told it!!!"
