you have to train him not to do it. when he nips you yelp, just like a hurt dog and immediently stop play for a few minutes. he'll get the idea.

firmly say no and swat him away hes doing the mothing and nipping to be "top dog" our collie did the same thing. this is what worked now its going to sound highly crazy but try it!
Get on the floor with dog and start playing with him... like ruf him up and stuff once he starts biteing at you take his rear leg thats farthest away from you and his front leg thats furthest away from you. Flip him on to his back.. it may make a rather nasty thud but it doesnt hurt the dog. the positon your body so it is hovering over him this is showing that YOUR the "top dog". it may take a couple of times buut he'll get it after a while its jsut like in a wolf pack you have to be the alpha dog!

He will not out grow this. One, collies are herding dogs, so they nip as part of their job.
Two, you have to train it not to be mouthy, which takes consistancy and patience. When the dog mouths, nips, or bites at you, remove all of your attention and ignore the dog until he stops. Only give attention when he is not doing unacceptable behaviors.

He will outgrow it - with help from you. Don't let him do it!! He's a year old and should be way past that stage. However, some herding dogs can get very mouthy so stop it now.
When he tries to nip, firmly tell him no, say "ouch!!!". If he persists, ignore him. He'll learn that you won't interact with him if he bites - no playing, no petting, no eye contact, don't talk to him. Be very consistent and he'll learn.

you need to break him of the habit. at a year old, he didnt learn mannors and doesnt know he shouldnt.
ever time he so much as puts a tooth on you, say "no bite" in a stern tone (almost like a low growl). you might have to wrap your hand around his snout when you say it, but be careful if you dont yet know his temperment and how he acts when being disaplined. and after you say it, hand him a toy that he is allowed to chew on. when he starts to play with that instead of biting, praise him. it will take some time, but it will happen.

They should grow out of that earlier than one year... my dogs always outgrew that by about 3-4 months.. You need to make sure and correct him every time he does it, but dont be aggressive or hit them when they do it. If you gently push them away while using a firm corrective "NO" they will begin to understand that it is not OK to do. If you are too aggressive with him, he will become confused and he will not understand why he is being punished.

he needs to be trained out of it.the collie, like a border collie, rough collie etc, are all used commonly in herding, because thats what they were bred for in the first place.the nipping is a means they use for herding. when he wants to nip, give him something else to do, like a playtoy,or give him training. (coolies need theyre minds excercised)
