Well I wouldn't get her a computer game..8 yr. olds don't need to be on the computer (let alone have their OWN!) and if you get her a game you're just promoting using the computer--something an 8 yr. old doesn't need to be doing.
Here are some ideas for both kids..hope they help :-)
For your niece:
-Barbie dolls and accessories
-Some kind of craft kit like "make your own bead jewelry"
-Hair ties, bows, play make up, etc.
-A journal, cute stationary, pens/pencils
For your nephew:
-A box of Legos or Knex
-Any kind of board game maybe like "Disney Scene It"
-A scooter (somewhere I was last weekend had Razor scooters for $25..they used to be $100)
-A playdough kit
-A tent/playhouse

Ok, I am the mother of 3 boys!! 4, 7&8. It really just depends on how much u r willing to spend on your nephew and what he's into at this time. Action Figures and Hotwheels are always good. (U can never have to many of them). Mine like to be outside, so I get them like baseball stuff so they can make their own little field in the back yard, or any kind of outside activity to keep them off the games and not sitting in front of the tv all day. If u want to spend about $80 they have this really cool Big Wheel bike. It's called the Green Machine!! One of the best toys I bought for the kids and adults can ride it too.

Every year I ask my now 11 year old niece what I can get her for Christmas. She tells me to get her what I got last year. I have been getting her a new make up bag filled with real nail polish and lip gloss in cute/funky little girl appropriate colors. No Hello Kitty type cheap stuff. I also throw in things like nail files, those things that go between your toes when you polish them, a compact mirror, stuff like that. Age appropriate books, purses, tote bags to just put her "stuff" in. Vera Bradley brand seems to be popular among some tweens. If she isn't a girly girl, how about art supplies? My son is 6. He is getting an interactive globe from Costco, I've also seen them in Target. SpyGear is popular, my son loves Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars. They have some new spring action light sabers out. Walmart has Darth Maul's doubled bladed light saber. He also loves any type of Nerf gun. Hope this helps.

There is this stuff called moon sand and it is so cool it molds like play dough but feels like sand and never dries out. I hate play dough because it is so messy but love this stuff it comes in a carry case and has a shovle and rake and you can do anything with it. I know its not a computer game but check it out at least for the 6 year old. they will love it.

"Learning" toys are good for kids at those age levels. There are toy stores that specialize in learning-interactive games and toys for kids. They are geared toward the higher IQ kids, but the things they carry encourage thought and creativity, not just entertainment.
