Is it possible for someone to stay awake for three days then sleep for 4 hours or so, then stay awake another 3 days, and so on? While they still seem to have energy? Or do you think it is drugs?

It's unhealthy to stay awake that long and pretty unlikely without drugs...

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in America. Our stressful lifestyle and rush-rush culture has helped to make this number one. However, each person has an individual sleep cycle and some of them can be pretty unusual when compared to the common circadian rhythm.

The situation you describe is not only possible, but more common than you might imagine. As one ages, one does need less sleep, and if one is working unusual hours (graveyard shift for example) than the circadian rhythm can be severely disturbed as well.

The energy level the person is feeling may be due more to adrenalin than any naturally healthy form of energy, but there are those who successfully get by on very little sleep. The main concern would be if there were any symptoms of sleep deprivation or stress; shaking hands, blurry vision, difficulty concentrating, etc. The individual may want to try and create a regular pattern for preparing to sleep and sticking with it for a few weeks and see if that helps create a more regular pattern of sleep. The most important thing is to not toss and turn in bed for this can create a "bed anxiety." Find something boring to do such as paying the bills or homework rather than something that is interesting like watching television or reading a good book. In time, the sleeping pattern should return to normal.

If this is a long-term issue, and the person is suffering due to the uncommon sleeping pattern, then I would recommend contacting a sleep research center to explore possible issues and potential treatments.

I hope this is not someone your around alot. A person can go longer on no food and water than they can go without sleep. The brain will eventually sleep and after that hallucinations start and this person will loose conact with what is real and what isn't. Chances are real good it's meth. Get away from them.

It's possible - for some people, depending on their personality and circumstances. Whether or not it's healthy is far more open to doubt; sleep deprivation is a common form of torture.
