If you want to do running and lots of walking, choose the Beagle, they are a breed who needs lots of exercise to be happy. If you want a dog that is a lap dog get the pug. They are both great dogs, one is not better then the other, they just have different temperaments. If you live in an apartment the pug would be the better choice.

Well, if you want an outside dog, a beagle would do better than a pug. If you want a smaller dog, get a pug and if you want a bit larger one, get a beagle. Both dogs do bark a little, but a beagle would be my choice, just from experience.

I don't think it's right to rule out pugs because of health issues they are prone to. EVERY breed has their own health issues that they are prone to having. I think you should read about each of the two breeds (tons of info available on the internet) and determine which one fits your family and life style better. I personally have 3 pugs. Two of them have never had any health issues and one of them was born with a liver shunt, but is now healthy and strong as a horse! I can't say I know much about beagles, but pugs... they are such characters! They are a great family pet, they are greadt with kids, they are very affectionate.
This quote comes from the Pug Dog Club of America, "A Pug's character is unique in that he is a clown at heart with a terrific sense of humor but at the same time he carries himself with great dignity. They are not too delicate for fun and games. A pug is anxious to please, anxious to learn and anxious to love. His biggest requirement is that you love him back."

personally I would choose a beagle because if you like to excersice abeagle would brath easir and is better to excersice with....pugs can't breath very well and it would be hard on them if you were to excersice with them...if you just wanted an inside dog than pugs would be an okay choice but you would want to keep an eye on their health.

Beagles tend to be a little chatty. They like to hear their voice. Also, it is hard to train them to walk without a leash. They have a tendency to take off if they smell something of interest (squirrel, duck, etc). If you don't mind that, they are one of my favorite breeds. Pugs are quite cute, but I recall hearing something to the effect that they are susceptible to illness, including respiratory problems.
