Poor nutrition could cause loss of bone density which in turn would make a person shorter.
Some muscular diseases would also cause a person to "shorten" as the muscles atrophy and contract.
Living generation after generation at very high altitudes would cause a shortening of the skeleton.
Bone loss caused by osteoporosis would cause shortening in stature as the vertebra compress along with the cushioning discs.

I agree with Woah_girl: While Young people generally do NOT experience the phenomenon of shrinking, it all depends on their bone and muscle structure. The degeneration of bones and muscles is what causes people to "shrink" as they get older, when diseases such as Osteoperosis cause bones to lose some of their mass, thereby causing the person to "shrink".
Sometimes younger generations can have these degenerative diseases, but in general it's not widely seen among the younger population.
