I have a fat cat who is very affectionate and a new puppy who is a little guy, half pekinese and half ****-szu who is always rushing the cat. The cat hasn't scratched him yet but I worry that he might harm the little guy's eyes if I just let him do what he wants to do with the cat. How can I teach the little guy to get along with the cat? I've kept a doggy fence up between them but the cat can jump over it, and I'm getting to old and tired of having to step over it every time I go into the kitchen.

just let them work it out.. chances are, nothing bad will happen... you cant prevent everything though.. and your just going to drive yourself crazy having to constantly worry if they are in the same room, or having to constantly seperate them. The puppy will calm down eventually and it will work itself out.

I think the two animals will work it out. Cats are pretty good at keeping unwanted dog attentions away from them, especially with a puppy.

I would keep the cat's nails well trimmed. An accidental scratch could injure the puppy's eye - not highly likely and possible nonetheless.

I have had pets for a long time and I think you shouldn't worry about it. The cat will scratch the puppy and the puppy will learn its lesson. It is highly unlikely that the cat will damage the puppies eyes so I wouldn't worry about them. All families have growing pains.

The puppy thinks the cat is a friend to play with, so he's going to keep annoying him until either you or the cat teach him otherwise. Our cat refused to discipline our puppy, so we intervened and taught him that he has to ignore the cat. You should find opportunites to socialize your puppy with other dogs so he can learn which animals he is allowed to play with and which he must avoid.

There is only one thing you can do, let them work it out themselves. Separating them does not work. I have three dogs and three cats, they all get along very well. Our last kitten we rescued ,is a tomcat and the cats worked it out they chase each other and play, but no one gets hurt, the dogs were not pleased with the new kitty and all I had to say was, you better be good to the kitty, they finally all sniffed him and there is no problem.
