Could be a number of things, some serious, others no so much.
Best bet is to have a vet look at it.

Could be a bad case of scabies, also known as mange, which is caused by a microscopic mite that bores into the skin, causing the hair around the affected area to fall out. I suggest you take your dog to a vet to have it examined, because if you don't take care of it, you will have a bald and sick dog. I am sure you have seen wild pigeons with mange that have really frizzled feathers and look sickly with bald patches throughout their plumage. Us humans can get it too, as I have once contracted it from an infected kitten, causing a nasty red welt on my hand. Your vet will prescribe a special cream and medicine for your dog to take, and I also suggest you wash your clothes in bleach to kill any mites that may be living in the threads.

-Ring worm (a fungal infection of the skin, not really a worm at all) is the fisrt thing that comes to mind.
-Allergies, don't seem to fit very well b/c i think that there is usually itching with that, but I could be wrong.
-It could be nutritional. The dog could have internal parisites and not being getting enough vitamins. Or maybe he is not getting fed proper food.
-It could maybe be mange, my dog was a rescue and had mange, she didn't scratch at it at all, but she had bald patches on her legs, face, and tales
-It could be something completly different!
Take your dog to a vet and get proper treatment. I tend to disagree with buying ointments from the store for humans, because humans know not to lick the stuff off, dogs don't.
Good luck

It sounds like a fungal infection, similiar to ringworm, which could be transmitted to you and children. You can go to a store and get some generic anti-fungal cream (used for atlete's foot), and rub it on the spots twice a day, and that should cure it after about 4 to 7 days, or you could go to a place that sells animal supplies, like a feed store or Pet's Mart, and get some Iodine shampoo. Give the dog a bath with the iodine shampoo, usually once or twice should do the trick. It also won't hurt to use both of these treatments. Best of luck to you.

If your dog is developing bare spots or has a patchy, moth eaten look, there is almost certainly something wrong.Anything from parasites to infections, nutritional deficiencies to hormonal problems. If your dog has circular patches of red or crusty skin,it most likely is ringworm or it could be a mite. The best way to find out would be to take your dog to the vet. They are the trained professionals.

It is probably dry skin. Use an oatmeal based or moisturizing dog shampoo 2x's a month and get a good dog conditioner for him. Human shampoo will cause horrible skin problems because the pH is all wrong for a dog. Don't over-bathe him. And give him a raw egg once or twice a week and that will help.

anyone on this site asking advice from total strangers about health problems with their dogs, should have their dogs confiscated, then the owners should be shot! If you don't have the sense/money to take your dog to a vet immediately, then you shouldn't be allowed to own a dog. As for S.French who advised someone whose dog shat on the carpet to "beat it, and make him eat it", I'd like to do the same to you. I was about to call you an animal, but that would be an insult...... TO THE ANIMAL!
