One FREE way is to apply for a loan or credit card. If you get refused they will send you a letter in the mail stating that you have 30 days to request a report to show why they refused you credit. The report is free. It is not the same detailed credit history you would pay for, but it tells you if you have late pays or other credit blemishes, the date, and the company they were with.

Go to your bank, and deposit at least $2000 into a savings account- if you haven't already got it there.
Then ask the bank for a loan against that $2000. You can pay it back over the next year, or the next six months, but make regular payments, and you will have established yourself as a good credit risk. They might even offer you one of their credit cards at the end of that time.

You are generally allowed to request your credit report annually without charge from the three major credit reporting companies. Experian, Equifax and and TransUnion.
Take a look at the FTC website on how to request your copy:

You don't have to have a credit card, per se. Expedia and the others keep a credit history on you all the same.
